Two days later, Obote sent Special Forces to Kabamba to make accountability of the events. At this spot, the rebel force grew by 700men with overwhelming firepower and left for Luwero jungles. The barracks armory emptied and about 260 men refused to join the rebels while about 100 defected to civilian life. The rebel forces fired overwhelmingly in support with their ally force in the barracks and repelled the then backup force, disarmed all the remaining soldiers off weapons and radio communication gadgets. Panicking Tumwine accidentally dived on his hot gun burrel injuring and losing his eye instantly. Unfortunately, the overwhelming fire exchange between the government forces sent Elley Tumwine into fear who accidentally released a bullet, which alerted the backup force to fire in the direction the rebels hid. This gave confidence to Museveni forces that had not yet fired a single shot. There was a fire exchange between the forces in the barracks and that, which had come to give backup. The rebel forces arrived through the jungles and two minutes later government backup forces arrived using the main road to the barracks. Meanwhile, intelligence in Kampala got information about the planned raid and a backup force organized to counter the raid. Being close friends with Mathew Rukikaire, Amama Mbabazi led the team to Mathew’s home in Kampala from where they mobilized some guns, food, medicine and money. In 1981, he was behind the scenes in the formation of NRA and actually, he is the founding member of NRA. The youth team descended to extreme fear, disoriented and the next thing they waited for was death. It is on record that the Joint Chief of Staff was amazed by the young men whom he advised to do more research to perfect their plan since they were still young. Amama Mbabazi had a well written plan with his colleagues. In 1978, he is remembered to have led a group of youth to the office of the Joint Army Chief of Staff where today the Embassy of France is housed and asked him to topple Idi Amin. He joined active politics in early 1978 during Idi Amin’s regime. He got a Bachelor of Laws Makerere University and a Post Graduateĭiploma in Legal Practice at Law Development center makerereĭuring Amin’s regime, he worked as a State Attorney in the Attorney General’s Chambers from 1976 to 1978 when he joined youth politics.
